Approved as a Single District Online School Program Through the 2016-17 school year.
Student Enrollment Instructions:
Students apply for enrollment to our program via application which may be found on our schools website or a physical paper version can be filled out and submitted at our school site.
Students are then interviewed by a staff member who determines if the student is eligible for enrollment.
Once Accepted, students are assigned a certificated advisor who will review each students individual needs and develop a written student learning plan for that students. Students will choose between the types of courses offered by our on-line programs, on campus courses, and textbook driven courses as a part of the plan.
Explorer Academy is K-12 grade on-line school program for students who live within the South Kitsap School District Service Area. Explorer Academy provides an offering of courses K-6 grade utilizing electronic curriculum and teachers from Explorer Academy and 7-12 grade courses/teachers utilizing the On-line platform From Advanced Academics managed by teachers at Explorer Academy in the South Kitsap School District. Students may also be taking traditional classes in conjunction with the on-line courses from Explorer Academy Staff who is Washington State certificated and highly qualified in the subjects areas they teach.

Kindergarten – 6th Grade
Our Math, Language Arts, History, and Science courses are provided by Fuel Education, a partner in personalized learning who helps transform the education experience inside and outside the classroom. Their open, easy-to-use Personalized Learning Platform enables teachers to customize courses using their own content, Fuel Education content, 3rd party partner content, and open educational resources.
The Health course is divided into two separate sections, as normally offered by South Kitsap School District: Grades K–2 participate in our Risk Watch program; grades 3–6 follow The Great Body Shop.
Physical Education (PE), Art, and Music are optionally offered by you — the parents. (SK Online Academy offers Art and PE when scheduling permits)
All K-6 students are assigned a specific block of time, 1 to 3 hours weekly, when they are required to attend class in one of our on-campus classrooms. This provides social contact and also hands-on academic enrichment. Students master each lesson before moving on. Education is delivered through a hybrid model combining at-home instruction, online lessons, small group workshops, and personalized meetings with an accredited instructor. SK Online Academy’s rigorous curriculum meets and exceeds Common Core State standards.
7th Grade – 12th Grade*
Full time students are given the opportunity to enroll in 12 semester courses per school year. These will include all state and South Kitsap School District required 7th through 12th grade courses, such as English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Online courses are provided by Advanced Academics, who has a proven track record in partnering with schools and districts throughout the nation to deliver customizable online learning solutions that include web-based curriculum, highly qualified teachers, a 24/7 support environment, AP courses, World Languages, and a technology platform specifically designed for middle and high school education.
Students may use Shared Enrollment with neighborhood schools (7th-12th), WestSound Tech (11th-12th), or Running Start (11th-12th).
Full time students can expect to average 25 focused study hours per week. Satisfactory progress is monitored in weekly progress checks and a monthly progress review by a certificated teacher.
Students must be self-motivated, self-disciplined, and have access to the internet. The student’s ability to manage his/her own time, follow directions independently, respond to communication in a timely manner, and ask for help when needed, are necessities. Students must have personal transportation to and from all required campus meetings.

Explorer Academy is South Kitsap School Districts On-Line school provider that provides families with students from
kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to combine the best aspects of public schools with learning at home. Most instruction occurs at home using district provided materials. Explorer Academy students are part of the South Kitsap School District.
Student-Teacher Contact Requirements
Students meet on a regular basis with a Consulting Teacher who is knowledgeable in setting goals and objectives, suggesting alternatives, recommending resources, and assessing progress. The consulting teacher is also available to assist the student and provide a successful and rewarding educational experience. Students may be required to meet face to face, synchronously, or asynchronously each week depending on the goals developed in the Written Student Learning Plan.
Explorer Academy is funded by the state and SKSD as a Alternative Learning Experience (ALE). While much of the instruction occurs at home, Explorer Academy is NOT a home-school program.
There are specific requirements set forth by the state and school district that must be met.
- Provide a parent-partner for student
- Accurately document school work completed at-home and study time
- Meet state requirements for adequate progress each month as defined in student’s Written Learning Plan.
Most students find they are successful when they devote the following number of study hours:
- Grade K – 3 4 hours per school day
- Grade 4 – 6 5 hours per school day
- Grade 7 – 12 5 – 8 hours per school day
- Note: Many students split their enrollment between Explorer Academy and another school. Home study hour requirements are adjusted accordingly.
- Participate in weekly progress check with Consulting Teacher
- Attend regularly scheduled conference with Consulting Teacher
- Participate in on-campus instructional time as prescribed by Consulting Teacher
On-campus classes are for registered Explorer Academy students only
- Participate in state and district assessments
Explorer Academy utilizes a combination of district adopted textbooks, for students at all grade levels. We utilize the K-12 on line program for students in grades K-6 and Advanced Academics as our on-line course provider for grades 7-12 which are aligned with the Washington State standards. Some students may use the OdysseyWare on line curriculum for credit recovery options only. In addition any curriculum used at Explorer Academy has been aligned with Washington State standards and approved by the South Kitsap School district.
