Overview

K12, Inc. ‘s Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA), a program of the Omak School District, is an online curriculum, technology and learning services virtual program provider. We provide Washington State k-12 students with a world class education grounded in high academic standards helping them reach their full academic and social potential through Washington State school districts. K12’s web-based academic program combines online technology with traditional instruction and materials.

The K12 curriculum and online program is a unique blend of engaging curriculum which includes online and offline lessons, as well as a variety of education activities and plenty of opportunities for socialization including access to statewide outings, clubs and more.

Our k-8 curriuclum provides the six core courses needed to complete students’ core kindergarten through 8th grade: language arts/english, mathematics, science, history, art and physical education. The curriculum is mastery based with assessments built into every lesson to guide and tailor the pace of the progress to each child’s needs. Easy-to-use online lesson planning, scheduling and progress tracking tools help students, parents and teacher monitor and manage each student’s progress towards completion.

Our high school curriculum offers more than 105 high school courses enabling students to earn their high school diploma and find their own path to post-high school success-whether that’s in college or in the workforce. Math, english, science and history courses are offered in multiple levels, including advanced placement classes, to meet the needs of diverse learners. Students can take up to four years of a world language and choose from a variety of electives.

Online instruction is provided by Washington State certified teachers who work directly with the student and in conjunction with the learning coach (k-8) and mentor (in high school a mentor is usually a parent, guardian or caring adult selected by the parent or guardian) to ensure student success. Teachers provide both synchronous and asynchronous instruction and support to students by telephone, kmail (K12’s internal email and communication system), web conferencing, other electronic means and face to face meetings. In high school students have one subject specific teacher for each subject studied, with teachers working together as a teaching team. Teachers grade students’ assignments and assessments and respond to student questions via kmail, telephone and conduct online full class meetings, online tutorial sessions to reinforce difficult topics and online “office hours” to allow students to “drop in” with questions.

I really liked that my student was able to work at his own pace. Not all people learn at the same pace some need more time on some things then others. So I felt that on the things that he need more time to understand we could take that time, because on other things that he understood right away he went though them at a faster pace. But don't try to do a program like this if you think it is easier because it isn't. For those students that has someone that can stay at home with them or has time to help when needed or that are advanced this is a great experience and way to go.

I was very impressed with Washington Virtual Academy. I enjoyed being able to work at my own pace. I feel like I've learned a lot from all the materials both online and offline. I look forward to learning a lot in High School next year!

We like that this program is self-paced. My duaghter struggled in a classroom environment. She is doing much better with WAVA and or teacher is very caring.
