Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA) is an online public school within Omak School District. WAVA’s mission is to provide all interested WA students with access to exceptional curriculum and tools that will enable each child to maximize his or her success in life regardless of geographic or demographic circumstance. WAVA works towards this goal by utilizing K12 Inc.’s robust online curriculum and learning platforms while focusing on the development of close connections and interactions between teachers, students and parents, all in pursuit of maximizing student growth and achievement. WAVA’s Core Educational Values are: Effort creates ability; Communicate, collaborate, celebrate; and Make each day meaningful.

All WAVA teachers are fully certified in Washington State and are assigned to students by courses and/or grade levels. WAVA teachers have the primary responsibility for assessing work, monitoring progress, and assuring the successful implementation and progress on the written student learning plans. Teachers will define specific student assignments, progress targets, assessments and attendance requirements. WAVA teachers provide both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (recorded or written) instruction, feedback and support to students by telephone, kmail (K12’s internal email system), web conferencing, online classrooms and other electronic means. Easy-to-use online lesson planning, scheduling and progress tracking tools help students, parents and teachers monitor and manage each student’s progress in all of their courses.

WAVA teachers work closely with Learning Coaches (grades K-5) and adult mentors (usually a parent, guardian or caring adult selected by the family) to ensure that all students progress and succeed while working from home. All WAVA Elementary and Middle School students are required to have full time adult supervision provided by the parent, guardian or family designee during the school day instruction and learning activities. HS students may also require adult supervision in order to be successful within WAVA. If so, this supervision must be provided by the parent, guardian or family designee.

Families must provide or arrange for daily access to computers with high speed internet access that meets the specifications of the online school program. ( Additionally, students must have webcam and audio microphone capability to participate and interact in live, online classes.

WAVA’s high school curriculum enables students to earn their high school diploma and find their own path to post-high school success-whether that’s in two or four year colleges, technical colleges or in the workforce. Math, English, History and Science courses are offered at multiple levels, including honors & some advanced placement classes, in order to meet the needs of diverse learners. Students can take up to four years of a world language and choose from a wide variety of electives. Each June, WAVA holds a traditional face-to-face graduation ceremony in Tacoma.

WAVA exclusively offers district approved online courses to both full and part time students in grades K-12 that reside in Washington State. The school aims to serve students that can benefit from the unique nature of online coursework and student-teacher interactions. This encompasses all levels of students – from advanced, to “on track” to those that may be struggling. WAVA also is able to serve special needs students, homebound students dealing with health issues, students with discipline and behavioral challenges, military family students and many students who are simply seeking an alternative to the traditional brick and mortar school setting. All courses and services are provided exclusively online at WAVA.

Student-Teacher Contact Requirements

WAVA students are required to attend all interactive online sessions assigned by their teachers. For elementary students this minimum requirement will be anywhere from 1 to 6 live classes per week. For middle school and high school students this requirement increases and the range is 6-12 live classes per week. Students may be assigned and required to attend additional online support sessions in line with their unique learning and progress needs above the ranges listed above. All students must be able to complete required contacts with teachers through digital means such as phone, email, online classrooms, texting, etc. Each school day students are expected to engage in assigned online learning activities and to respond to any digital communications from their teachers.

Courseware Platform

WAVA uses a proprietary on-line learning system developed by K-12 to organize and run the WAVA program. This OLS includes K-mail, a secure e-mail tool available to all students, parents and WAVA staff. Primary platform tools include Blackboard Connect which provides students and teachers a real-time web-based classroom interaction space and E-college, the platform in which our HS content and curriculum is delivered. Additional on-line tools include Scantron Assessments, Drop-box and Study Island.
