The VHS Collaborative (VHS) is a non-profit collaborative of schools providing online courses that supplement traditional face-to-face offerings. VHS courses are student-centered, instructor-led, and cohort-based. Students take courses in a global classroom environment with peers from around the world, typically as a part of their school day.
The VHS Collaborative offers a variety of engaging and creative courses appropriate for a general high school and middle school population. For a complete list of course offerings (can be sorted by grade level, subject, and more), visit: https://my.vhslearning.org/PublicStudentCourseList.aspx
The VHS Collaborative offers courses for students at all levels. We offer standard, honors and Advanced Placement courses as well as courses appropriate for gifted and talented middle schools students. Our primary focus is on unique electives rarely offered in face-to-face schools. VHS offerings supplement what a school can offer its student population.
The VHS Collaborative offers cohort-based, scheduled, asynchronous courses where students work on a weekly schedule, but have complete flexibility as to when they attend class and complete their assignments. Students from different time zones interact within the online classroom and collaborate on group projects in classroom forums. Emphasis is placed on authentic assignments and depth of learning. Any instructor offering optional synchronous office hours/meetings, ensures discussions are recorded for the future reference of all students. All students taking VHS courses are assigned a site coordinator who monitors student progress and can intervene as needed on behalf of a student who may have special circumstances. VHS works with both instructors and site coordinators to ensure students have a quality educational experiences.
Courses are mapped to National Content Standards and are created following strict instructional design standards.
VHS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (CSS-MS) and AdvancED/Northwest Accreditation Commission.
VHS courses are taught by Highly Qualified Teachers as required by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. All VHS teachers complete a rigorous graduate-level training program before teaching with VHS. VHS instructors are certified within the disciplines they teach. Over 85 percent of VHS instructors have master’s degrees or higher.
All VHS AP courses have been audited by the college board and have been approved to use the college board AP designation. Many VHS courses are also NCAA approved for initial eligibility (school code #221356).
All VHS courses are offered in the Desire2Learn Learning Management System.
