Honors English III surveys American authors and the historical development of literature in America. The course illustrates how the events in history and the cultural heritage of the times influenced the work of authors. The ability to analyze literary works is stressed. Topics include Puritanism, Deism, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Realism, and Naturalism.

Course Objectives

The following is a list of the key concepts and ideas that you should understand by the completion of the course.

1. Compose, identify, and revise a complete sentence with regards to the parts of speech, effectiveness, and purpose.

2. Organize, create, and analyze compound and complex sentences, a paragraph, a business letter, an announcement, a friendly letter, an essay, a summary, a derivation, and a palindrome.

3. Classify and identify figurative language such as a simile, metaphor, personification, and onomatopoeia.

4. Synthesize, compare, edit, and revise written texts.

5. Explore the parameters, terminology, and concepts involved in creating, identifying, and critiquing nonfiction, fiction, the short story, poetry, biography, autobiography, letter writing, research, and summarization with regards to purpose, appropriateness, and effectiveness.
